Where should a small business start with AI?
A simple framework for finding your first high-ROI AI project, without hiring a data team.
Most small businesses don't need a grand AI strategy on day one. They need one project that clearly pays off, builds confidence and teaches the team how AI fits into their work.
Look for repetitive, rules-based work
List the tasks your team repeats every day: answering the same emails, re-typing data, chasing invoices, building weekly reports. These are prime candidates because the value is easy to measure.
Score by impact and effort
For each task, estimate hours spent per week and how painful errors are. Then rate how hard it would be to automate. Start with high-impact, low-effort items. That's your quick win.
Pilot, measure, then scale
Run a 4–6 week pilot with clear before-and-after metrics. Once it works, use what you've learned to tackle the next opportunity on your list.
